Cornyn Tapped to Head GOP’s 2010 Senate Races

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) was elected chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Tuesday, putting him in charge of the GOP’s electoral fortunes in the Senate for the 2010 election cycle.

“I am honored by the confidence my Republican colleagues have placed in me to serve as the next Chairman of the NRSC,” Cornyn said. “I intend to hit the ground running and start laying the ground work with my colleagues for Republican victories in 2010.”

Cornyn had faced a challenge for the position from Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.), who withdrew after his prolonged election results forced his concentration on that race and its impending recount.

Cornyn also named his former campaign manager Rob Jesmer as executive director of the NRSC.

“I am very impressed with the political acumen, intelligence and work ethic that Rob displayed in managing my recent re-election victory,” Cornyn said. “Those qualities, coupled with his extensive leadership experience working on campaigns across the country, will be an invaluable asset for the NRSC moving forward.
