Report: Fred Thompson Mulling Run for RNC Chair

Former presidential candidate and Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) may throw his hat into the ring for the race to head up the Republican National Committee (RNC).

According to a wire service report, supporters of Thompson, including a former lead fundraiser, are encouraging the occasional actor to enter the race to head the RNC, which has already attracted high-profile names.

“I was talking with John McCain today,” said Scooter Clippard, a fundraiser for Thompson and McCain’s presidential campaigns. “Fred Thompson’s name came up, and we both talked about whether he would run for the chairmanship,” Clippard said.

Other frontrunners for the RNC chairmanship are former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele and current Chairman Mike Duncan. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) had also indicated interest in the position, but told FOX News yesterday indicating that he intended to spend more time focusing on policy solutions to issues.
