McCain: We’re Coming Back Strong
John McCain says his campaign is coming back strong in the final days of the race according to both his internal tracking polls and his gut.
“We are coming back strong,” McCain told ABC News’ Charlie Gibson in an interview today. “I have been in enough campaigns — I see this kind of enthusiasm and this kind of turnout. I can sense it. I can feel it more than my internal polls, which are very good.”
McCain said he is within the margin of error or close behind Democratic rival Barack Obama in key swing states, including Virginia and Florida, and that he is leading in North Carolina. Public polls show Obama leading narrowly in all three, with his largest lead in Virginia (6.5 percent according to RealClearPolitics’ poll average).
“There’s 10, 12, 13 states. You and I could go down the list that we are within margin of error or slightly behind,” McCain said in the interview, parts of which will air tonight on ABC’s “World News with Charles Gibson.”
“And so what matters? Turnout and who turns out. And, look, I’m very confident. The enthusiasm is there. Whether the turnout will be there, I think you and I will know better on Tuesday night.”
McCain said he is confident in his chances on Nov. 4, but the Arizona Republican stopped short of guaranteeing a victory as he did last Sunday.
“I’m confident we’ll win next Tuesday,” McCain said. “I think we’re going to fool the pundits one more time.”
