Clinton Gives Obama the Nomination
After 30 states cast their roll call votes for the Democratic nomination at the Denver convention today, registering a mix of votes for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), Clinton, speaking on behalf of her state’s delegation asked that the roll call vote be ended and Barack Obama be nominated the Democratic party’s candidate for President.
“Let’s declare together, with one voice, right here, right now, that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president.”
The motion was approved by convention delegates shouting “yay.” None were given the opportunity to dissent, as the chair recognized that two thirds had approved, and moved quickly on to announce that Obama had been officially nominated.
Immediately after the announcement, a band stationed to the side of the convention stage began playing “Love Train,” and convention goers cheered, chanting “yes we can” as the lights were dimmed.
A few moments later, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took the stage to announce that Obama had asked her to inform the audience that he accepted the nomination.Celebration resumed after Pelosi’s remarks.
