Powers Vs. Powers for Fossella’s Seat
Francis H. Powers, the leading GOP candidate in the race for retiring Rep. Vito Fossella’s (R-N.Y.) House seat, could face a challenge from his son, Francis M. Powers, the Staten Island Advance is reporting.
The younger Powers has announced he will seek the Libertarian Party’s nomination for the seat.
“This is not about my dad,” said the younger Powers, 47, told the Advance. “I’m running against the Republican candidate.”
The elder Powers responded by questioning his son’s lifestyle. The younger Powers reportedly runs and independent record label and performs in Staten Island rock band Box of Crayons.
“I’ve tried very hard for many years to help my son,” the elder Powers said in a statement. “Unfortunately, he’s rejected everyone’s help to live a healthy lifestyle. Regardless of whether he wants to run for Congress, I still stand ready to help him move his life in a positive direction.”
The elder Powers was endorsed by Staten Island Republican leaders to replace Fossella. He will most likely face Democratic city councilman Michael McMahon, who was endorsed by Staten Island Democratic leaders, in November.
