Rep. Wexler: ‘No Legitimate Point’ For Clinton To Fight Until Convention

Rep. Robert Wexler (Fla.), Barack Obama’s most vocal supporter at Saturday’s Democratic meeting over Florida and Michigan’s delegates, said that Hillary Clinton doesn’t have a case for continuing her campaign beyond this week.

“I think she will think very hard about what the ramifications of such a decision would be — and for what point: There would be no legitimate point, because Senator Obama would, in fact, have enough of the delegates to rightfully claim the nomination,” Wexler said Monday on CBS’s “The Early Show.”

The Florida congressman said that “only Sen. [John] McCain wants Sen. Clinton to go to the Democratic convention.” But he dismissed the suggestion by host Harry Smith that Clinton could “ruin” the Democrats’ chances against McCain by continuing her presidential bid.

Clinton delegate guru Harold Ickes has said that her campaign reserves the right to take the fight over Michigan’s delegates to the Credentials Committee at the Democrats’ national convention in August. Ickes has taken issue with four delegates he says have been taken from Clinton and given to Obama.

Wexler, however, said that more dissension over the delegates would help only McCain.

“And the irony is that they’re talking about a differential of four votes, or delegates, in Michigan,” Wexler added. “So even if Sen. Clinton went to the convention and prevailed with respect to her view, it wouldn’t change the result. The important thing is that this week Sen. Obama will have, it appears, enough delegates to claim the Democratic nomination. And the general election starts a real debate about fixing our economy, bringing gas prices down.”
