Hagee Apologizes to Catholics
John McCain supporter Pastor John Hagee has sent a letter to Catholic League President William Donohue apologizing for disparaging remarks made about Catholics.
Since earning the Pastor’s endorsement, McCain has been plagued by Hagee’s comment that the Catholic church is “a godless theology of hate” and “the great whore.”
In his apology, Hagee writes, “I better understand that reference to the Roman Catholic Church as the ‘apostate church’ and the ‘great whore’ described in the Book of Revelation is a rhetorical device long employed in anti-Catholic literature and commentary.”
“I hope to reestablish with Catholics with whom I and all Evangelicals must unite to be a voice for life, the family, marriage, and Christian values,” Hagee writes.
During an interview last month on ABC’s This Week, McCain conceded to host George Stephanopoulos that is was “probably” a mistake to solicit Hagee’s endorsement. McCain added though that he is “glad to have his endorsement.”
