Two Key Swing States Require Photo ID From Voters
The Supreme Court just upheld Indiana’s law requiring that voters present photo identification at the polls, The Hill’s Alexander Bolton reports.
The 6-3 ruling could have an large impact on this year’s presidential race. In addition to Indiana, which holds its crucial presidential primary May 6, swing states Florida and Michigan also require photo identification at the polls.
Michigan’s law, passed in 1996, has yet to be implemented in a presidential election due to a ruling by the state ‘s attorney general. But the state Supreme Court ruled that the law was constitutional last year, allowing the state to enforce the voter ID requirement in 2007 local and state elections. With today’s high court’s ruling, the law will be in effect this November, too.
