Stupak Shops Michigan Delegate Compromise
UPDATED 2:20 PM:
Michigan Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak sent a letter to DNC Chairman Howard Dean and the Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton campaigns today proposing a plan to seat Michigan’s delegates at the Democratic convention.
“The 2008 election gives us, as Democrats, a unique opportunity to make history and change the direction of our country,” Stupak writes. “The last thing we want to do as Democrats is to disenfranchise voters.”
The plan would split the state’s 156 delegates into two groups.
The first group of 83 delegates would be split according to the results of Michigan’s January 15 primary. Among those delegates, Hillary Clinton would get 47 delegates for garnering 55 percent of the state’s votes. Obama would get 36 delegates reflecting the roughly 40 percent of voters who chose “uncommitted.”
The second group of 73 delegates would be split between the two candidates based on the percentage of the national popular vote following the last Democratic primary.
Neither campaign nor Dean have voiced their thoughts on Stupak’s plan.
Stupak endorsed John Edwards last April and has remained neutral since.
