An artist in Saddam Hussein’s hometown has made a statue of a shoe to commemorate the shoe attack on George W. Bush during his last Iraq visit as U.S. president, reports the New York Post.
Sculptor Laith al-Amari said that his creation, made of copper and fiberglass, honors the pride of the Iraqi people. The statue, unveiled in Tikrit on Thursday, is based on the shoe hurled by an Iraqi journalist at Bush during a news conference in Baghdad in December.
The shoe thrower, Muntadhar al-Zeidi, was arrested by Iraqi authorities and faces charges for assaulting a foreign leader. He has applied for political asylum in Switzerland.
