Barbara Lee: Fidel was ‘very energetic’

The United States’s trade embargo with Cuba hasn’t worked and it has isolated the U.S. from the rest of the world, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) said Wednesday.

Lee’s remarks came after she returned from a congressional delegation trip to Cuba with fellow members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

The embargo, Lee said on MNSBC Wednesday, has “isolated the United States from the rest of the world.”

The delegation met with former Cuban President Fidel Castro, whose health caused him to abdicate the presidency last year. Despite some reports that the leader’s health continues to deteriorate, Lee said Castro was “very energetic” and “his mind was very sharp.”

“We had a discussion on a variety of issues and he was very clear on the fact…that Cuba is ready to talk to the United States without preconditions.”

Lee noted that she has been working since the 1970s to normalize relations with Cuba, which she said is “in the United States’s best interest.”
