Hoyer postpones roll call on D.C. voting rights

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) has delayed the House vote on D.C. voting rights legislation.

Here’s the statement:

“A House vote on the D.C. House Voting Rights Act will be postponed to allow more time for discussion on outstanding matters. I remain committed to working with the Democratic leadership, Congresswoman Norton (D-D.C.), President Obama and all other supporters of D.C. voting rights to address the remaining challenges so we can bring this historic legislation to the Floor as soon as possible.”

We’ve emailed Hoyer’s office asking why exactly the vote is being delayed. Hoyer said last week that the vote would be this week since the measure has already passed the Senate. One potential reason is an amendment to the Senate measure that removes restrictions on gun ownership in D.C.

UPDATE: We’re hearing that the House is trying to work out the issues relating to the gun amendment and D.C.’s gun laws. Hoyer does hope to bring the measure to a vote in the near future, though.
