Poll: Pelosi’s numbers slide
House Speaker Nancy’s Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) dust up with the CIA over a 2002 briefing appears to have dropped her approval ratings, according to a CNN/Opinion Research poll.
The poll found that 39 percent approve of her job performance while 48 percent disapprove.
That puts Pelosi behind congressional Democrats, who registered a 51 percent approval rating.
CNN draws a parallel between Pelosi’s approval rating and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s (R-Ga.) during his first year as speaker. Gingrich had a 37 percent approval rating in 1995.
It seems to me, though, that the better barometer would be comparing Pelosi and Gingrich’s approval ratings at the same point in their tenures – 2 years in. In 1997, Gingrich’s approval rating and slumped to 25 percent, according to CNN.
In any event, the GOP strategy of getting the focus back on Pelosi appears to be working at least to some extent.
