VIDEO: Ron Paul: It’s a ‘shame’ we no longer use secession

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) said that while calls for Texas’s secession aren’t very serious, it’s a “shame” people aren’t talking more seriously about it.

“He brings up an important issue,” Paul said of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s (R) statements last week arguing that his state could still secede from the United States. “I heard people say this is treasonous and un-America — but don’t they remember it’s how we came into being.”

The libertarian Texas lawmaker defended the “principle” of secession from attacks he called “hysterical.”

“It’s a very good principle; it’s the principle of a free society,” Paul said. “It’s a shame we don’t have it anymore.”

The onetime presidential candidate also said “a lot” of Americans are thinking the way forefathers did during the American revolution, when the U.S. declared independence from the King of England.
