Lamar Smith asks why accused Levy murderer isn’t reported as an illegal immigrant
The media are taking it too easy on the man accused of murdering former D.C. intern Chandra Levy, Rep. Lamar Smith’s (R-Texas) said this week of the case that ended the career of a onetime colleague.
Media outlets have failed to mention that Ingmar Guandique was an illegal immigrant, Smith declared during a one-minute speech on the House floor Wednesday.
“The man charged recently with murdering Ms. Levy entered the United States illegally, but you might not have known that by following the news,” Smith said. “This is an example of how the media’s liberal bias on immigration issues prevents Americans from getting the facts.”
Smith had served in Congress with then-Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.), whose affair with Levy led to speculation in the summer of 2001 that he was involved with the murder.
“The media used terms like ‘incarcerated felon’ and ‘jailed attacker’ to refer to the suspect in news reports,” Smith continued. “They neglected to point out that the suspect would not have been able to commit the alleged murder if he had not entered the country illegally in the first place.”
