Sen. Stevens Indicted
Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (R) has been indicted on corruption charges, CBS News is reporting.
The Justice Department will hold a news conference early this afternoon, presumably to provide further details on the indictment.
The FBI reportedly recorded phone conversations between Stevens and Alaskan oil contractor Bill Allen, and secretly wiretapped Stevens as early as June 2007, before the senator publicly acknowledged he was under investigation.
Allen worked with investigators and agreed to the wiretapping, according to the report. Allen has pled guilty to bribery and is a witness against Alaska legislators in a broader corruption probe of Alaskan public officials.
