DeMint ‘concerned’ about Sanford’s ability to lead

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) might not be looking to a congressional ally in Sen. Jim DeMint, who urged the besieged governor to “do the right thing.”

DeMint refused to call outright for Sanford’s resignation in the wake of a sex scandal, but said he was “concerned” about the fellow conservative’s ability to serve.

“A lot of us are talking to him behind the scenes in hopes that he’ll make the right decision about what needs to be done,” DeMint said during an appearance on Fox News.

“Obviously, I’m concerned of whether or not he is in a position that he can continue to lead the state,” DeMint added. “And a number of us are talking to him quietly, and hopefully it will be resolved.”

DeMint also seemed to confirm reports that state Republicans had given the governor 72 hours to resign, predicting there would be “some resolution in the next week.”
