Five years after Katrina the work goes on (Rep. Steny Hoyer)

Five years ago this week, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in the Gulf Coast, leaving a path of destruction in its wake. On this solemn occasion, we pause to remember those who lost their lives and those whose livelihoods were forever changed by this tragedy. Today, the region continues to recover and rebuild, thanks to the indomitable spirit of the people of the Gulf Coast.
 
Democrats have been dedicated to the rebuilding effort, working to help residents get back home and back to work, while preparing for future storms. Democrats passed a Gulf Coast Recovery package that included assistance to help bolster levees, restore the coastline, recruit teachers, maintain health facilities, provide housing assistance, assist small businesses, and retain law enforcement and other essential government employees. To date, Congress has invested nearly $120 billion in emergency funding for infrastructure repair, education, housing, health care and assistance for individuals and businesses. The Obama Administration has maintained a strong presence in the region as well, working to eliminate bureaucratic red tape, return more residents to long-term housing and protect the region against future storms.
 
Five years later, the waters may have receded but the work to recover and rebuild goes on.  We honor those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy and vow to press on until the recovery is complete.
