The day of Russia
In the past year, Russia and the United States have worked to renew our relationship and build a partnership based on mutual respect and mutual interest. We are making progress in areas of common concern and shared responsibility, working together to reduce nuclear stockpiles, stop the spread of nuclear weapons, counter violent extremism, and combat the effects of climate change. We have signed an historic new treaty to reduce our strategic nuclear forces. And with our other partners, we passed a United Nations Security Council Resolution bolstering the international nonproliferation regime by sending a clear message to Iran’s leaders that they must uphold their responsibilities. Like any nations, we will not agree on every issue. But we recognize that our futures and our fates are entwined as we face the shared challenges of the 21st century.
Our two peoples are forging new connections and partnerships beyond the halls of government, including through the Bilateral Presidential Commission. Russian and American scientists, entrepreneurs, artists and athletes all work together and enrich both countries with their shared experiences.
I am confident that our renewed relationship will continue to grow deeper and broader, nourished by the energy, perseverance, and strength of the Russian and American people. In honor of the Day of Russia, I send the Russian people my warmest wishes for a peaceful and prosperous year to come.
