Congress must learn to set priorities that are consistent with the priorities of the American people. We must not waste taxpayer money on programs that are redundant, ineffective, or no longer necessary. There is no question that funding cancer and autism research, which could help millions of families nationwide live longer and better lives, is a higher priority than duplicative federal funding for a narrowly-focused program for migrant and seasonal farm workers. I am glad that my colleagues agreed unanimously.
