Olympic-Style Model Would Work for Baseball (Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton)
I asked Sen. Mitchell a question that now appears only Roger Clemens can answer. I will ask him next month why he came out big, bad and bold, denying the use of illegal substances after refusing to voice the same denial to Sen. Mitchell.
I also fear that baseball will not understand their own self-interest in adopting the independent, Olympic-style model for monitoring drug use. If Donald Fehr and Bud Selig want to chase illegal substances out of baseball and have the ultimate deterrence effect, they will go to an independent commission. That way the union will never have to represent dirty players and baseball will cease to be embarrassed as it has been because of controversy.
I can think of no single action that can better restore confidence then the adoption of an independent, Olympic-style model for baseball. Truly, there is nothing to lose.
