DSCC Goes After Johanns, Sununu

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) released two web ads Friday urging voters not to support GOP Senate candidates.

The first ad attacked former Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns, who resigned from his Bush administration post Sept. 20 to pursue the Nebraska Senate seat vacated by Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), who announced Sept. 8 he would retire at the end of his term in early 2009.

Johanns’ resignation resulted in some criticism from Senate Democrats, who were (and still are) in the process of working on the 2007 farm bill in the Agriculture Committee. The ad accuses Johanns of quitting on the farm bill, which the DSCC says is important to Nebraska’s future.

Former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey (D), who served from 1989 to 2001, is considering a run against Johanns.

The second ad accuses Sen. John Sununu (R) of representing President Bush more than his New Hampshire electorate. The ad details Sununu’s defense of the Iraq war and Bush’s troop “surge” of early 2007.

Former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D) will oppose Sununu for his Senate seat in 2008.
