SCHIP Legislation Should Not Expand to Parents (Sen. Richard Burr)
We must continue to provide health coverage to elderly, poor, and disabled Americans in a fiscally responsible and compassionate manner. SCHIP should remain as it was intended, to provide health insurance to children whose parents cannot afford health coverage. This legislation should not be made into a vehicle for a nationalized, single-payer health care system. SCHIP reauthorization presents an opportunity to implement a market-based program that will give consumers more options while using our tax dollars more wisely. We need to examine ways to give consumers more opportunities to make their own health care choices.
