Why We Need More Newborn Screening

Nothing is more important to a parent than the health and welfare of their child. As a health care provider, I recognize the importance of acting early and focusing on prevention.  Early detection means early treatment. Many parents have no idea about screening unless a child is diagnosed with a disorder.  Because parents don’t know about the screening process prior to birth, and many are unlikely to see a pediatrician until after the blood sample has been taken, it is important to inform them of their options in a timely matter.

That is why I, along with Congresswoman Roybal-Allard introduced the “Newborn Screening Act of 2007.”  Better public education about screening is pivotal.  We need to give parents the tools and information they need so they can make more informed decisions about their child’s health.
