Durbin: A Democratic Debate
Tuesday the House of Representatives opens debate on a non-binding resolution expressing disapproval of President Bush’s plan to send 21,500 more troops into that conflict.
The debate itself has met opposition from some in Congress. Some have claimed that domestic dissent emboldens America’s enemies, while others have said that a non-binding resolution would accomplish nothing.
With such arguments likely to surface today, we’ve posted a clip of Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) explaining why he feels a Congressional debate on Iraq resolutions is necessary. In a Jan. 30 Judiciary Committee hearing, Durbin says a Congressional debate on the war is “evidence of what democracy is all about.”
