State of the Common Good

This week’s State of the Union address, while addressing several important concerns, lacked solutions that will benefit the common good.

On one issue, President Bush got it right. We affirm his commitment to comprehensive immigration reform. On other issues, however, he failed once again to understand how they impact most people, especially those who live at the economic margins. While we affirm his continued commitment to global AIDS relief and malaria prevention, we regret that he failed to address other global issues in which the U.S. is either a key player or should be a key player. One global issue that was addressed was the “War on Terrorism,
