Wednesday: Ghani speech, budget debate

Senate and House lawmakers will gather Wednesday to listen to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani speak before a joint meeting of Congress.

House lawmakers will convene at 10 a.m., before immediately recessing. They’re expected to reconvene at 10:45 a.m. for the speech. Meanwhile, senators are expected to gavel in at 9:30 a.m. for leader remarks.

{mosads}They’ll resume debate over a Republican budget resolution before recessing at 10:30 a.m. for Ghani’s address.

The speech comes in the wake of President Obama’s announcement that he would slow the drawdown of U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Lawmakers are expected to resume their budget debates after Ghani’s speech, with votes expected in the Senate this afternoon. 

 
Meanwhile, first votes in the House are expected between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., with last votes between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
