Tuesday: Budget, Iran

Senators will take an initial vote on the House-Senate budget Tuesday morning.

Senators will convene at 10 a.m., before taking a vote at 10:15 a.m. on a motion to proceed to the budget blueprint.

{mosads}Under congressional rules, senators have 10 hours to debate the budget conference report.

The Republican budget would balance in 10 years, and includes a push to repeal Obamacare.

Senators also continue to look for a path forward on legislation, spearheaded by Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), that would allow senators to review and vote on a final deal on Iran’s nuclear program.

The legislation has been stalled since late last week when Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who is running for president, and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) used a procedural tactic to try to force a vote on an amendment requiring Iran to recognize Israel’s right to exist as part of a final deal.

Democrats warn that if the amendment is added to the legislation it could derail negotations because Iran likely wouldn’t agree to the requirement.

McConnell had been expected to file cloture Monday on the legislation, which would block further amendment votes. But, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) said Monday that the Republican leader is trying to get an agreement to allow for additional amendment votes.
