A closer look at next week…

House Republicans also plan to pass another bill that would replace the defense cuts required under the so-called “sequester,” part of their ongoing effort to ensure that defense is spared from tens of billions of dollars in cuts early next year.

{mosads}Speaking of the sequester, Congress will get a jolt late in the week, when the Obama administration releases its report on how it proposes to implement the $109 billion cut to 2013 spending. Republicans are hoping this report will build support among Democrats for reworking the sequester to avoid defense cuts, but the report may also prompt Democrats to ensure social programs are spared.

Also in the House, members are expected to pass a bill that would block any recent Solyndra-like applications for government loans, and another bill reauthorizing the ability of intelligence officials to begin overseas surveillance of terrorists without an immediate court order.

The Senate plans to take up the Veterans Jobs Corps Act, which would create a five-year, $1 billion program to help train veterans for non-military jobs.

Below is a more detailed look at the week ahead:

Monday

The House reconvenes at 2 p.m. and will start work on up to 11 suspension bills, with votes at 6:30 p.m.

The Senate also meets at 2 p.m., and soon after, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is expected to file a motion to end debate on the Veterans Jobs Corps Act, S. 3457. That bill would set up a $1 billion, five-year job training program at Veterans Affairs.

The Senate is in for the rest of the week but has no definitive plans beyond Monday.

H.R. 406 – To amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to permit candidates for election for Federal office to designate an individual who will be authorized to disburse funds of the authorized campaign committees of the candidate in the event of the death of the candidate,

H.Con.Res. 132 – Providing funding to ensure the printing and production of the authorized number of copies of the revised and updated version of the House document entitled “Hispanic Americans in Congress,” and

H.R. 6336 – To direct the Joint Committee on the Library to accept a statue depicting Frederick Douglass from the District of Columbia and to provide for the permanent display of the statue in Emancipation Hall of the Capitol Visitor Center.

Tuesday-Friday

The House meets at noon Tuesday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. on Friday to finish any uncompleted work, and will take up four bills under regular order this week:

H.Res. XXX — the six-month continuing resolution (no text of this unnumbered resolution was available as of Friday evening),

H.R. XXX — the National Security and Job Protection Act, calling for the repeal of the sequester as it applies to defense programs (this bill was unnumbered as of Friday evening),

H.R. 5949 — the FISA Amendments Act Reauthorization Act, which would continue to let intelligence officials monitor terrorists overseas without an immediate court order,

H.R. 6213 — the No More Solyndras Act, blocking new federal loans to green energy companies, and

H.R. 5544 — the Minnesota Education Investment and Employment Act, allowing for a land swap between the federal government and Minnesota.
