GOP to move to regulations next week

The House Rules Committee on Tuesday will meet to mark up a resolution that instructs 10 House committees to review existing and pending regulations that are hurting job creation and economic growth.

The Rules Committee intends to mark up the resolution, set a rule for consideration in the House and then proceed to a House vote later next week.

The resolution specifically asks committees to examine regulations based on 12 factors, including whether they hurt or limit job creation, economic growth and access to credit. It also asks committees to find regulations that create economic uncertainty, result in unfunded mandates on employers, impose undue cost burdens on companies, or were developed in a non-transparent way.

The resolution affects House committees on Agriculture, Education, Energy and Commerce, Financial Services, Judiciary, Natural Resources, Oversight and Government Reform, Small Business, Transportation and Infrastructure, and Ways and Means.

Business groups and Republicans have charged that regulations from the Obama administration are choking off the economic recovery. They have focused on implementation of the healthcare and Wall Street reform bills, but have also targeted regulations on the environment, energy and technology. 

President Obama last month ordered a review of regulations last month to eliminate any rules that are stifling economic expansion. The order was part of an effort by the administration to counter suggestions it is anti-business.
