BP said it paid out $266 million to individuals and companies through a damage claim process it set up. That represents the majority of the $501 million in payments it made to Mississippi last year.
Palazzo added that similar tax changes have been made before to help damage award recipients, such as those receiving payments related to the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
