The letter argued that the wars have cost $2.3 trillion so far, plus almost another trillion dollars in “future costs for veterans and their families.” The called ending the so-called “overseas contingency operations” would lead to “substantial” savings that would help the supercommittee achieve its goal.
The supercommittee is tasked with finding $1.5 trillion in deficit savings over the next decade, and President Obama has asked the committee to cut even more to help pay for his jobs plan.
Republicans signing the letter were Reps. John Duncan (R-Tenn.), Tim Johnson (R-Ill.), Walter Jones (R-NC) and Ron Paul (R-Texas). Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) spearheaded the letter, which was delivered Wednesday.
