Rep. Campbell: Obama lacks ability to negotiate with opponents

Campbell added that Obama’s effort toward the end of the effort to reach an agreement was counterproductive.

“He ran to a teleprompter every chance he could get to excoriate the people with whom he was negotiating, rather than stay quiet as previous presidents have done in similar circumstances in order to facilitate a deal,” Campbell wrote. “That was counterproductive.”

Campbell said the deal came together between the House and Senate only after Obama “stepped out of the negotiations.” Campbell said that it was a failure on the part of the White House that Speaker John Boehner walked out of talks with the administration.

“This is not about ideology,” he wrote. “The President has the right to advocate for his positions. This is about competency for doing the job or lack thereof.”

Campbell said he voted for the final agreement because Congress could not allow a government-made financial tragedy, but also because the deal is a real step toward reducing spending. He said Republicans have shown that they have changed the debate in Washington to one about spending cuts, not spending increases.
