Rangel looks to undo community-service requirement for public housing residents

But Tuesday, Rangel said these requirements are a hurdle to low- and middle-income people, who are looking for work and wanting to spend time with their families.

{mosads}”The requirements stipulated in the United States Housing Act of 1937 are just outdated,” he said. “No one in this day and age should be subjected to such burdensome obstacles merely to stay in their homes.

“This bill is a significant step to help unburden low- and middle-income Americans so that they can find jobs and spend time with their families,” he added. “Not only will it aid struggling families, but it will help put this economy back on track.”

Rangel said more than 600,000 people living in New York benefit from public housing assistance, and 1.2 million households nationwide. Under his bill, H.R. 3564, public housing residents who make their payments on time would be exempt from the public service and economic self-sufficiency requirements.
