Resolution supports ‘One Love Day’ to honor slain UVA student

Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) has introduced a resolution that supports the designation of May 3 as “National One Love Day” in an effort to raise awareness about dating violence.

Ruppersberger’s resolution honors Yeardley Love, a lacrosse star at the University of Virginia who was murdered by boyfriend George Huguely V. Huguely was also a stand-out lacrosse player at the school, and was convicted in 2012 of Love’s murder — he’s now serving a 23-year prison sentence.

{mosads}Love’s murder on May 3, 2010, made national headlines, and Ruppersberger said supporting One Love Day could prompt discussions about dating violence.

“Having just celebrated Valentine’s Day, this season is a great time to have just one conversation about what a healthy relationship is,” he said Tuesday.

Love’s mother, Sharon, founded the One Love Foundation to help educate people about relationship violence. She attended Ruppersberger’s Maryland press conference on Tuesday about the resolution.

“I am continually amazed at the support and efforts in Yeardley’s honor to create widespread awareness of Relationship Violence,” Love said today.

The resolution, H.Res. 485, finds that millions of people suffer abuse from people in close relationships, and that nearly 30 percent of all female homicide victims were killed by their husbands, former husbands or boyfriends.

It says the House supports “National One Love Day,” and all efforts to stop relationship violence. It also recommends that “every person speak to just one individual about what a healthy relationship is and help that individual feel empowered.”
