House rejects Dem motion to instruct on payroll tax bill
On Wednesday night, Democrats warned that the language in the House bill could allow states to use unemployment money for other purposes besides paying the unemployed. Specifically, the bill lets up to 10 states a year apply for the right to set up alternative programs aimed at getting people back to work.
Republicans rejected Democratic arguments on Wednesday by saying the welfare system is broken and that states need the flexibility to explore alternative means of helping people who are out of work.
The Democratic motion was defeated by voice vote Wednesday night, after which Democrats called for today’s recorded vote.
