Oregon rep. gets emotional during moment of silence for shooting
Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) on Tuesday barely held back tears during a moment of silence for the Oregon high school shooting victims.
Blumenauer, who represents the district where the shooting at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Ore., occurred, said he had visited the school recently.
{mosads}”I was there recently, and the kids gave me a wooden bowtie with a bicycle on it,” Blumenauer said, holding up the bowtie.
One student was killed and a teacher wounded. Police said that the gunman likely shot and killed himself.
“In a scene that is achingly familiar, this morning at Reynolds a shooting occurred,” Blumenauer said.
Blumenauer’s stifled sobs could be heard during the moment of silence.
Earlier Tuesday, the House passed a resolution to condemn the May 23 shooting in Isla Vista, Calif.
Several lawmakers noted that the House had observed many moments of silence in support of mass shooting victims recently.
“Another moment of silence for shooting victims on the House Floor. This is becoming a daily thing. What will it take?” Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) tweeted.
