House Dems invite Obama to Mexican border
Texas Democratic Reps. Rubén Hinojosa and Filemon Vela on Tuesday invited President Obama to visit the U.S. border with Mexico amid the surge of child immigrants.
Hinojosa, the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and Vela, who both represent southern Texas districts, said the president should view the border firsthand during his upcoming trip to the state.
{mosads}”We know that you share our interest in caring for these young migrants while addressing the root causes which have driven them to leave their homes and seek refuge in the United States, and we look forward to seeing you in Texas,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to the president.
In a separate statement, Hinojosa said it was necessary to witness the activity at the border in person.
“To fully comprehend what is happening in our region, one must see this firsthand because one will certainly be impacted by the humanitarian side of this issue,” Hinojosa said.
On Monday, Obama announced that he would review possible executive orders on immigration because Congress has not passed a comprehensive reform bill. The president also formally requested Congress to approve $2 billion in supplemental appropriations to boost border security, increase deportations and add more judges to review the backlog of immigration cases.
