GOP rep on immigration: Obama and I ‘on different planets’

Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) suggested Monday that he and President Obama are light years apart on immigration policy.

“Not only do the president and I not see eye-to-eye on immigration, I think it’s fair to say we’re on different planets when it comes to the issue,” Harper wrote in a newsletter to constituents.

{mosads}Harper, who has served in the House since 2009, charged that the president wasn’t doing enough to secure the border.

“For nearly six years I’ve opposed President Obama’s immigration policies. I’ve taken a stand against legislation he’s proposed, statements he’s made and policies he’s implemented. Probably my biggest frustration has been his spiritless approach to ensuring that our borders are secure from weapons, drugs and undocumented individuals,” Harper said.

Harper voted Friday night in favor of both the $694 million supplemental appropriations package for the border and a bill to limit expansion of the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals program that delays deportations of immigrants who arrived to the U.S. illegally as children.

“There is no amnesty in this bill,” Harper said of the spending package.
