Ellmers: HealthCare.gov had ‘simple security flaws’

Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.) said Friday that it was “no surprise” the federal healthcare insurance website still had flaws a year after its launch.

On Thursday, reports emerged that the federal website HealthCare.gov was hacked last month. Federal health officials said no personal data was compromised.

{mosads}Ellmers argued the hacking was another chapter of the healthcare law’s rocky rollout.

“So it comes as no surprise that, months later, little has changed and basic public trusts have been taken for granted. The Obama administration must account for why, almost a year after this website’s rollout and spending nearly a billion dollars of taxpayer money, these basic security flaws are still occurring,” Ellmers said.

Ellmers said measures should be taken to protect data stored on the website. The North Carolina Republican urged the Senate to pass — and the president to sign — a bill approved by the House earlier this year that would require the Department of Health and Human Services to notify people within two days if there has been a security breach on the insurance website that exposed personal information. 

“The American people deserve to have their personal information secured, not exposed to simple security flaws on a multimillion-dollar platform,” Ellmers said.
