Bill would establish independent panel to review Secret Service

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) introduced legislation Thursday that would establish an independent panel to review the Secret Service.

The measure comes in light of the White House security incidents unveiled earlier this fall, including a man who scaled the White House fence on Sept. 19 and made it all the way to the executive mansion’s East Room.

{mosads}”Several high-profile incidents have caused Americans to question the leadership and management of the U.S. Secret Service,” McCaul said.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson created a panel in October to review the incident.  McCaul’s bill, H.R. 5698, would review the agency as a whole.

“Rather than investigating one specific incident, this independent panel will take a hard look at the Secret Service as a whole, and make specific recommendations to ensure the Secret Service has the best possible leadership structure, internal policies, tools, and resources to meet its mission.”

Specific items under review would include the Secret Service’s leadership structure, culture and communication between different parts of the agency.
