House adjourns for weeklong recess
The House adjourned shortly after noon on Friday with no plans to return until four days before funding for the Department of Homeland Security expires.
Lawmakers from both the House and Senate won’t be back in Washington until Feb. 23 after spending all of next week back in their districts for Presidents Day.
{mosads}The Senate adjourned Thursday night and will vote on Feb. 23 for the fourth time to proceed to the House-passed DHS funding bill that includes language to revoke President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. All of the three previous votes to invoke cloture on the motion proceed failed to get the necessary 60 votes to advance.
Both chambers have been in session for six consecutive weeks since the start of the new Congress. But departing for a weeklong recess with the looming DHS deadline stands in contrast to September 2013, when House and Senate leaders canceled a recess shortly before what resulted in the first government shutdown in 17 years.
