House goes into recess in sign of trouble
The House unexpectedly went into recess subject to call of the chair Friday afternoon, in a sign of trouble for homeland security funding and the GOP’s No Child Left Behind rewrite.
Both the three-week stopgap bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security past midnight and the No Child Left Behind reauthorization have shaky vote counts due to opposition from conservatives and Democrats.
{mosads}It is unclear when the next vote series, and what it will entail, will take place.
Conservatives are upset with the No Child Left Behind bill because leadership didn’t allow amendments that would have allowed states to opt out and do away with federal testing requirements to get votes. Heritage Action and Club for Growth, two influential conservative groups, are both key-voting against the bill.
Meanwhile, the DHS stopgap bill faces opposition from conservatives who don’t want to vote for any spending bill unless it explicitly revokes President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. Democrats are also not inclined to punt the debate to three weeks from now.
