Dem: GOP has ‘declared war on poor working families’
Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) on Wednesday accused the GOP of targeting low-income families in its latest budget proposal.
The House GOP budget resolution released this week would make the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps, a block grant program run by states. Turning SNAP into a block grant program would cause funding levels to either remain static or decrease, because states wouldn’t automatically receive new additional funding for increased demand.
{mosads}”With the release of yesterday’s budget, it’s official: Republicans have declared war on poor working families in this country,” McGovern said on the House floor.
McGovern argued that converting SNAP into a block grant program unfairly targets low-income Americans to achieve budget savings.
“We should not be balancing the federal budget on the backs of the working poor, period. Cutting food assistance and making hunger worse in this country will not solve our fiscal challenges,” McGovern said.
