GOP lawmaker calls for term limits

Rep. Tom Marino (R-Pa.) has introduced  a bill establishing term limits for members of the House and Senate.

Under Marino’s proposal to amend the Constitution, House members could serve up to six two-year terms, while senators would be limited to two six-year terms.

The Pennsylvania Republican, who’s served in the House since 2011, said some of his fellow lawmakers have overstayed beyond their effectiveness.

{mosads}”Too few have had power for too long,” Marino said in a statement. “I have great friendships and working relationships with many of my colleagues here in D.C. but a common thread among many of them is they have been here too long and not enough has changed for the better; it has gotten worse.”

Marino argued that capping lawmakers’ time on Capitol Hill would give them an incentive to make “meaningful change” or else step aside.

“Term limits should be to politicians what contract expirations are to athletes; work hard, prove your worth, get motivated, make a real and lasting change — or someone else will. Period. I really think this is something the American people, of every political persuasion can agree on,” Marino said.

Marino has introduced the measure twice in the last four years, but it never gained traction in Congress.

Earlier this week, Reps. Rod Blum (R-Iowa) and Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) created a Congressional Term Limits Caucus for members who support term limits.
