House adjourns for a week; Senate recesses for two
Members approved the adjournment resolution, S.Con.Res. 3, after the Senate approved it Thursday. The resolution gives the Senate the option of recessing or adjourning.
{mosads}Earlier Friday, the Senate said it would stand in recess until Tuesday, Jan. 22. Standing in recess allows the Senate to act as if it is still working during the first day of the new session, during which Senate procedures can be amended by a simple majority.
Senate Democrats have been considering rules changes that would make it harder for the minority to block legislation. Some are pushing for the inclusion of a requirement that senators filibuster legislation by actually standing in the Senate and talking.
