NDAA set for Friday passage after marathon amendment session
In a key vote, members also voted to limit the extend to which President Obama can detain U.S. citizens suspected of terrorism.
{mosads}Members also set up several votes for Friday, including on language requiring Obama to reveal to Congress any details about a proposed missile defense deal with Russia. A Democratic proposal to ban National Guard sponsorship of motor sports and professional wrestling is also up today, as is a proposal to reduce the U.S. military presence in Europe.
One interesting vote will be on a proposal from Rep. Richard Nolan (D-Minn.), who has proposed cutting $60 billion from the DOD.
“It’s time to put an end to the wars of choice, and the nation-building abroad, and to start rebuilding America,” Nolan said late Thursday. Republicans called this proposal “dangerous,” and are likely to be supported by several Democrats.
Members did not get to more than a dozen other amendments, all of which will get debated Friday. Some of them will be gathered together and quickly passed in the eighth “en bloc” amendment — the passage of seven other en bloc packages is what allowed the House to escape from amendment work relatively early Thursday night.
GOP leaders expect to pass the NDAA in the early afternoon, which will be the last vote of the week for the House.
