Monday: Key test vote for the amended immigration bill
The Republican-backed additions to the bill call for comprehensive plans to secure the border, the construction of 700 miles of border fencing, electronic border and employment systems, and thousands of new border agents.
{mosads}Opponents of the bill say it would promote a rush of illegal immigration by allowing for the immediate granting of provisional status to illegal immigrants, and by allowing them to apply for green card status after 10 years without an absolute guarantee that the border measures will be put in place.
But the vote to end debate is likely to succeed, as the border provisions are expected to allow several Republican senators to support the bill.
The House is only in for a brief pro forma session at 11 a.m., and no votes will be held.
