House sets up Friday passage of education reform bill

The House approved several proposals by voice vote or otherwise disposed of amendments without needing a recorded vote, from:

— Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), reserving 10 percent of grant funding for teacher and principal training for grants allowing groups to provide STEM education. Withdrawn.

— Susan Brooks (R-Ind.), clarifying that federal funds may be used for computer science education. Accepted in voice vote.

{mosads}— Jared Polis (D-Colo.), allowing charter schools to use grant funds for teacher training and improving school conditions. Accepted in voice vote.

— Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.), requiring funding applicants to consider how to target services to low-income students and parents, including English language learners. Accepted in voice vote.

— Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), striking language that lets consolidated districts receive funding even if they don’t qualify after consolidation. Withdrawn.

— Scott Garrett (R-N.J.), clarifying that states opting out of federal funds are not required to carry out any federal education requirements. Withdrawn, as similar language was incorporated into the manager’s amendment.

— Paul Broun (R-Ga.), requiring the Secretary of Education to report to Congress on the average salary of employees associated with eliminated or consolidated programs in the Department. Accepted in voice vote.
