Lawmaker says Obama’s selective enforcement of laws ‘demeaning to our democracy’

“The president’s willingness to pick and choose which laws he will enforce is dangerous and demeaning to our democracy. It’s demeaning to the very idea of an elected form of government. We have a president, not a king.”

{mosads}Stewart cited the administration’s July 2 decision to delay the employer health insurance mandate for a year as an example of Obama’s selective enforcement of the law. He said Obama had no authority to make that decision, an argument other Republicans have been raising.

“How would my Democratic friends feel if Mitt Romney had been elected, and his first day in office he decided that he was going to pick and choose which parts of ObamaCare he was going to enforce?” Stewart asked. “Or what if he decided that the capital gains tax was a drag on the economy and he was no longer going to enforce that law?”

Other Republicans have made similar arguments since the employer mandate was delayed. Earlier this month, Rep. John Fleming (R-La.) made similar arguments, and said Obama’s picking and choosing which laws to enforce “makes him a ruler, not a president.”
